…a great review of our new album by Hip Hop Canada… check it out!

Vancouver, B.C. – Northern Lights is the latest LP from Vancouver-based hip-hop group Elekwent Folk. Friends since high school, the group consists of producer AstroLogical and MCs A-Ro and Slippery Elm. With the infusion of jazz, progressive rock samples and raw drum breaks, the trio has crafted a sound that echoes their classic hip-hop influences but still has a modern touch.

From the get go, it’s pretty clear from the hushed lyrics and groovy beats that this definitely isn’t your mainstream hip-hop; it actually compares more easily to a modern-day hippie vibe. Just a listen to the first couple of tracks, “Borealis” and “Seasons Go” sets a tone of spirituality, culture, and passion for the album. The lyric and beat combination makes their sound reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest, with its chill yet influential vibe. The chemistry between members of the group is really captured on “Beat Pilgrims”, where they feed off of each others’ energy – without overpowering the other – while spitting a story. By the end of the LP, most listeners will inspired to do something empowering themselves!

With appearances from Moka Only and Panther, the album screams West Coast. The most beautiful place on Earth is celebrated on every track. The trio strictly sticks to a theme, and that consistency is the difference that made Northern Lights a real piece of musical art.

About

- -- --- ---- ----- ------ ------- -------- -
Elekwent Folk is a hip hop group consisting of emcee/producers A-Ro, AstroLogical, and Slippery Elm. All collective was born and raised in Vancouver, and met in high-school where they would spend lunch hour freestyling. As Slippery began to develop a deeper interest in writing, and Astro was encouraged by friends in a band to try making beats, the two came together as the duo Satyr and released an LP independently in January 2009 entitled “The Genesis”. Energized by the positive feedback, Slippery, Astro, and A-Ro, began recording songs as the group Elekwent Folk, and in October of 2009 released a second LP entitled "Folk Fest". Folk Fest built on the foundation established by The Genesis, as all four members honed their style: further exploring themes of freedom, spirituality, spontaneity, and love, while attacking the excessiveness and destructive World views of modern society. Given it being written and recorded when they were at the pivotal age of 17-18, Folk Fest was an album of self-discovery for the group: each member beginning to powerfully define who they are as people, and artists. The group also continues to work closely with friend and mentor Prince Po to put out good music, and contribute to hip-hop culture in any way possible. Folk Fest is due to be re-released via Prince Po’s label Nasty Habits Entertainment in the Spring of 2010. Elekwent Folk embody the spirit of spontaneity, and like the name suggests Folk Fest truly is a folk festival—where different cultures harmoniously collide in a vibrant mosaic of colour and life. The album is a celebration, an offering to music and to the World. It is a collection of young men experimenting with the English language, funk, jazz, and progressive rock, to propel them into the future; and what that future has in store for these youngsters—only time will tell. Music made BY the Folk, FOR the folk!
