The Waldorf is dust. Again, we see art, culture, and community sacrificed on the altars of profit. Yet while everyone is up and arms over the closing a venue, football fields of forest are clear cut and burned, the oceans are dead, the oil economy (and in fact the whole economy) has collapsed, and thanks to industrial agriculture our soils are poisoned to the point were they are void of fecundity, making it impossible to continue to grow food. I see precious little of this communicated in Vancouver’s hip-hop community. Where are the MC’s brave enough to create works capable of answering the challenge of living apocalyptic times? Where are the beat-makers to create worlds of sound that we may dance among the ruins? It’s time to quit navel gazing and relying on the next man for recognition. This is hip-hop, not escapism and ego masturbation. We’ve got bigger fish to fry.
